Antisocial Personality Disorder
A serial killers suffer from Antisocial Personality Disorder and appear normal or charming, sometimes referred to as the "mask of sanity." Sometimes there is a sexual element to the murders and they may have a commonality such as gender, occupation, appearances, race, etc.
The term serial killer was coined in the 1970s due to cases such as Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz.
According to an FBI Behavioral Unit study 85% of the world's serial killers are in America. At any given time 20 - 50 unidentified active serial killers are at work continually changing their targets and methods.
Prostitutes, runaways, and others who lead transient and anonymous lives are usually not reported missing promptly and receive little police or media attention, making them excellent targets. Experts speculate on what happens to unsolved cases of murderers. Some may commit suicide, die, be incarcerated, in mental institutions, relocate, or stopped killing; a few turn themselves in.
Experts don't agree on an exact definition of a serial killer but general definitions are based on numbers and patterns: two or more unrelated victims in distinctly separate incidents.
The Northwest has a notorious history of prototype killers -- among them are Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer. Lesser known serial killers have claimed scores of lives but are only charged and/or convicted of one or two murders, but suspected of more.
Suspected or convicted serial killers in Washington. (.pdf)
According to Mike Rustigan, professor of criminology at San Francisco State University:
"With all of them, their motives tend to be total, deep and personal. They feel no guilt, no remorse and have an attitude of total disdain towards their victims.
"There's a self-importance that runs in all of them. With the Unabomber, for example, he demanded that The Washington Post and The New York Times publish his manifesto. You get the feeling that if he had just laid low, he may have remained on the loose to this day. His own brother saw the manifesto in his home and he then contacted authorities. I feel he felt upstaged by the Oklahoma City bombing, which made everything he had done up to that point seem like nothing."
Tod W. Burke, professor of criminology at Radford University and a former police officer explains:
"Most profilers say serial killers don't learn from mistakes in their previous killings, but I believe they do. They try to improve on their previous effort. You know how the more you do something, the better you get at it? Well, there comes a point where you peak and you can only go down.
"With serial killers, a greed factor will set in where they'll believe the more they kill and get away with it, the easier it will be. And that's when they get sloppy and get caught."

Evans confessed and led police to the shallow graves of Rysedorph, A Goodfella's Guide to New York: Your Personal Tour Through the Mob's Notorious Haunts, Hair-Raising Crime Scenes, and Infamous Hot Spots by Henry Hill, Bryon Schreckengos

The Hillside Stranglers by Darcy O'Brien -- For weeks in the fall of 1977, as the body count of sexually violated murdered young women escalated, the Los Angeles newspapers headlined the serial killer they named the Hillside Strangler. But another year passed and the mysterious disappearance of 2 women in Seattle before the police arrested Kenny Bianchi-and discovered the strangler was two men, Bianchi and his cousin Angelo Buono.
Depraved by John Glatt -- John Edward Robinson was a 56-year-old grandfather from rural Kansas. An entrepreneur and Eagle Scout honored as 'Man of the Year' by a Kansas City charity. To the women on the Internet, he was Slavemaster, a sadomasochist of torture. He promised money and adventure. For fifteen years, he trawled the Web, snaring women never seen again. Sue Wiltz spent two years researching the book and attended the trial. Dr. Godwin was a forensic consultant on the case.

3 Types of Serial Killers
  • Thrill Seekers: See outsmarting law enforcement as a game, enjoy media attention, police pursuit, and evading the authorities. They send messages, and keep records.
  • Mission Oriented:Feel they are doing society a favor by eliminating certain people like prostitutes.
  • Power and Control: Enjoy the victim's terror, suffering, and screaming.
  • Souvenirs & Serial Killers: Serial killers often keep mementos of their victims. Robert Keppel places these collections into 2 categories: souvenirs and trophies.
    • Souvenirs: Personal items allow the killer to enjoy the memories of the crime.
    • A trophy can become something of a shrine
Jeffrey Dahmer kept photos in his apartment. He had skulls of his victims in a closet, refrigerator, and freezer. Genitalia was preserved in formaldehyde.
In 1957, when police searched the Wisconsin farmhouse of Eddie Gein they found a bowl made from a human skull, a chair and suit made of human skin.
    • Signatures
Some serial killers repeatedly, leave psychological markers, called a signature. Signatures include posing, concealing victims, or inserting objects in the bodies after death for the killers gratification. As a killer needs to punish and degrade victims intensifies as they may develop unique preferences.
Robert Keppel, consultant to the Green River Task Force and author of Signature Killers, said. "They like to (leave signatures). They enjoy it. It's one of their favorable pastimes. It's my belief that all serial killers leave a sign. It's also my belief that we don't find it all the time because of decomposition or because he doesn't want you to find it ... It's what their sexual enhancement is."
James Fox, a Northeastern University criminal justice professor, says signatures aren't as common as people believe. They may use the same weapon or sexually mutilate in the same way, but use different methods to kill and prey victims. Ted Bundy enjoyed sadism, rape, and murder but no signatures weren't found. A signature goes beyond the act of murder, such as posing, which is present in less than 1% of murder cases. Inserting objects in a body after death is even rarer. Posing is not staging, moving a body to cover the crime and mislead pursuers.
A signature is different from a modus operandi, (mode of operation, MO) the way they find, overpower, and kill a victim without getting caught. The MO changes as the killer refines their methods.
How to connect serial killers to crimes:
"If your case is not as strong on one murder, you could testify about behavioral characteristics and how they are maintained throughout all the murders," said Keppel. "So, whoever did Number 1, they also did Number 2 and Number 3."
February 1990, Oregon State Police arrested John Sosnovke and Laverne Pavlinac for the rape and murder of Taunja Bennet, 23, a mildly retarded, woman who frequented bars. Pavlinac confessed, produced physical evidence, and implicated her boyfriend. The actual killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson, a long haul truck driver, and murderer of 8 women wouldn't allow anybody else take credit. After Sosnovke and Pavlinac received life sentences he confessed:
"I killed Tanya Bennett . . . I beat her to death, raped her and loved it. Yes I'm sick, but I enjoy myself too. People took the blame and I'm free . . ..Look over your shoulder. I may be closer than you think."
Randy Kraft, the "Scorecard Killer," a shy, ingenious psychopath, left a trail of as many as 67 mutilated bodies from California to Michigan.
Dennis Rader -- BTK Serial Killer
Roy Hazelwood, of the FBI's old Behavioral Sciences Unit, claims serial sex offenders are generally Caucasian males of European descent. "Every single sexual deviation is overwhelmingly dominated by white males. And most sexually related ritualistic crimes are committed by white males."
Hazelwood identifies predators who rape and murder children and women they know as disorganized. They don't plan attacks but are opportunistic, using weapons available at or around the crime scene and they do not conceal their crimes. Organized predators plan out the crime, and bring tools as they troll for strangers far away from home. They destroy the evidence.
Anger-Excitation Rapists plan methodically. They are cruel in relationships but they kill strangers.
Serial sex offenders rely on sadistic cruelty to act out fantasies. They use restraints, ritualism, fantasies, hatred, manipulation, and mind control.
Angel of Darkness by Dennis McDougal, Rick Morgan (Editor) -- In May 1983, Randy Kraft, computer consultant in Orange County, CA and 1967 economics graduate of Claremont Men's College, was pulled over by California Highway Patrol officers because of suspected drunk driving. Approaching Kraft's Toyota, the officers faced a dead, partially clothed US marine, drugged and strangled in the passenger seat. Kraft killed young male hitchhikers and patrons of gay bars. His victims were sexually tortured, impaled and mutilated. He kept a sketchbook from one victim, a camera from another, and electric razor from another. He took photographs of his victims posed in sexually provocative positions. His companion never suspected anything. Still suspected in 60 murders, Kraft lives on death row, maximum security, California's San Quentin death row for 16 murders in the 1970s and 1980s; he has a reputation as one of the most notorious serial killers in US history.
Born Evil or Born Genius: The Leading Cause of Crime and Turmoil in Today's World by Barry Sudiker
Male Crime and Deviance: Exploring Its Causes, Dynamics, and Nature by R. Barri Flowers -- Seeks to explore the types of offenses committed by males, characteristics of male offenders, how male criminality and delinquency compare with and differ from female delinquent and criminal behavior, explanations for male crime, and efforts at combating crime in this country. Particular attention is given to exploring the relationship between male aggression and masculinity, as well as the role that testosterone and other biological factors play in male crime and violence. The book focuses on the correlations between male violence and aggressive behavior and firearms, violence involving intimates, male sexual violence, bias crimes, workplace violence, terrorism, male perpetrated sexual offenses, youth gang crime, and school violence.
Dying for Daddy by Carlton Smith Jack Barron June 1992, hearts went out to Jack Barron when his wife Irene died in her sleep. Barron was at work when his wife's body was found by a neighbor. On Feb. 7, 1993, Jeremy, 4, died. Aug. 7, 1994, Ashley, 4, died. Followed by Barron's mother, Roberta Butler, 52, in February 1995 whose body was found in her condominium. They had a stormy relationship, until Roberta announced she wanted to evict him. Before she could she was found dead. Barron's former girlfriend, Starla Hayes, told a judge soon after his wife's death, Barron made a disquieting remark to Jeremy, 3, for crying about his "Mommy," Jack shouted, "If you don't shut up, I'll send you to where Mommy is!" She met the defendant in 1990, at a Lucky's supermarket where they worked. After his wife died, Barron found himself with no one to baby-sit his kids. Hayes, a mother of two, 6 and 8, faced the same problem, she and her husband had separated. She and her two children moved into Barron's 3-bedroom home several months after Irene's death. The two agreed to share childcare duties. Hayes said she and Barron began having sex. The housing arrangement wasn't working. A couple of months after moving in, Hayes moved out. Barron was arrested 5 months after the death of his mother. Barron blames the loss of his family on hereditary heart disease. The motive for the slayings was Barron's hatred of his father, who divorced Barron's mother and abandoned him when he was a teenager. He also wanted out of his marriage and to collect $170,000 in insurance. In Irene's personal effects, was an undated letter she had written to Barron. "I'm really sorry you're unhappy right now. We have so much to be happy and thankful for ... It really upsets me when I hear you talk about divorce." April 2000, a defiant Jack Barron was sentenced to 3 consecutive life terms in prison with no parole. Barron is the first man known to suffer from Munchausen-by-Proxy, where a person causes illness or death to a loved one in order to attain sympathy. Photos.

Unsolved Serial Killings
In 1978, Saint Cloud, Minn a murderer killed Bill Huling's family and left him for dead. Now, more than 20 years later, there are clues that lead to a serial killer.
Juarez slayings report: incompetent police but no serial killer. 10 years of murder, 300 hundred women and girls dead. No credible arrests.
Slaughter Night in Moscow by John Philpin -- Between dusk on July 21, and dawn, July 22, four women were murdered on the streets of Moscow. The total number of victims all women stands at ten since July 1. Does this city of ten million, capitol of the Russian Federation, have a serial killer preying on its women? Or does it, as some locals insist, have two serial killers at work? Or, as the police suggest, are two killers insufficient to accomodate all the victims who, they say, have little in common.
The Return of BTK - When the Killer Came Back -- The serial killer strangler who terrorized Wichita during the 1970s with seven murders is claiming responsibility for an eighth slaying and is believed to be in Wichita.
Case Study: Stopping a Serial Sniper -- During the summer of 1994, the Suffolk County Police Department with 2,663 sworn members, faced a series of sniper attacks .
An unidentified serial killer preyed on 4 California coastal communities from 1979 to 1986 murdering 10 people. These crimes spanned 3 counties and 4 law enforcement jurisdictions. DNA links 6 murders; the Method of Operation links the other 4.
Cleveland Torso Killer killed at least 16 people in the 1930s, but was never caught, despite the efforts of federal agent Elliot Ness.
Torso: The Story of Eliot Ness and the Search for a Psychopathic Killer by Steven Nickel
In the Wake of the Butcher: Cleveland's Torso Murders

by James Jessen Badal
-- During the Depression, the area known as Kingsbury Run on Cleveland's near East Side was filled with the unemployed and homeless who set up shantytowns. It was also the site where the gruesome remains of some of the Torso Killer's victims were found. Sifting through hundreds of original documents, police files (including the previously unseen files of the case's chief investigator Peter Merylo) and coroner's reports, and conducting interviews with surviving primary sources, Badal pieces together the chain of murders and the investigation that ultimately came up short. Illustrated with maps, rare crime scene and morgue photographs, and newspaper photos.

The Zodiac Killer in the San Francisco area is believed to be responsible for 37 lives in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His identity has never been confirmed. Some suspect Arthur Leigh Allen, a convicted child molester from Vallejo, Calif., who died in 1992 at age 58. Donna Lass, 25, worked as a nurse at the Sahara hotel in Stateline, Nevada and was by all accounts a "good girl". On Labor Day, September 6, 1970, Ms. Lass disappeared and some believe she was abducted from work by the Zodiac Killer.
The Southside Slayer killed up to 20 prostitutes in the Los Angeles-area in the mid-1980s. No one was charged. The crimes stopped in 1987.
1975 - 1990, at least a dozen young women were the victims of unsolved homicides in the New Haven, CT area. Authorities believe 7 may have been killed by one man. Detectives received tips about a man named Roosevelt Bowden and his link to the old unsolved murders. A violent man, in 1978, he fatally stabbed his daughter, Tabitha,1. Prosecutors agreed to a plea bargain for manslaughter carrying a maximum of 15 years in prison. By July 1986, Bowden was out on parole.
A call from a truck driver brought state troopers to a rest stop on Route 8 on a November morning in 1986. They found what was left of the body of Jack Franklin Andrews, 26. He had been chopped apart and sexually mutilated. His torso and arms were wrapped in a quilt and garbage bags and left on a snow bank. His legs, head and penis were never found. Detectives now think Andrews was the victim of a serial killer.
An unidentified serial killer preyed upon 4 California coastal communities from 1979 to 1986 murdering 10 people. These crimes spanned 3 counties and 4 law enforcement jurisdictions. DNA links 6 murders; the Method of Operation links the other 4. There may be more.
DNA and other forensic evidence suggests Albert DeSalvo, the "Boston Strangler," wasn't involved with the 1964 murder of Mary Sullivan, 19, believed to be the 11th victim of the Boston Strangler. January 4th, 1964, Sullivan's 2 roommates found Mary dead, strangled with a stocking. Investigators say this raises doubts about whether DeSalvo killed any of the women he confessed to strangling.
A Rose for Mary: The Hunt for the Real Boston Strangler
Mary Sullivan, 19, was the last, and youngest, victim in the Boston Strangler case that riveted the nation in the early 1960s. 14 months after Mary's brutal killing on January 4, 1964, handyman Albert DeSalvo, in jail on an unrelated sexual assault charge, told authorities he was the Boston Strangler and confessed to the gruesome murders of 14 women. DeSalvo, was stabbed to death in prison while serving time for a different crime. He was never charged with any the killings because no physical evidence linked him to the slayings. Many investigators and psychiatrists discounted his implausible and coached confession. The Sullivan family never believed he murdered Mary. Mary's nephew, Casey Sherman, exposes the truth behind her death and unravels the mysteries surrounding the Boston Strangler. Drawing on interviews with major figures in the case and exhaustive research, Sherman reexamines the crime scenes, initial police investigations, prime suspects, and DeSalvo's confession tapes, which have never been made public. He reveals the political motivations of the Boston Strangler Task Force and uncovers the role of flamboyant defense attorney F. Lee Bailey in manipulating DeSalvo's confession. Sherman also presents new DNA evidence, and discloses how his reinvestigation led to an alliance with the DeSalvo family, battling law enforcement officials in Massachusetts to exonerate DeSalvo and reopen Mary Sullivan's unsolved murder. Sherman's his decade-long search for justice unmasks his aunt's real murderer and provides new revelations about notorious Boston Strangler serial killings.

Chicago's unsolved murder mysteries -- September 18, 1966, Valerie Percy had been working on her father's campaign for the US Senate. The murderer was a stranger who broke into the Percy mansion, committed his crime and disappeared into the night. December 1996, Nan Toder, visiting the Chicago area from Florida was cut, strangled and beaten to death in her Crestwood hotel room. Karyn "Cookie" Kupcinet, daughter of the Sun-Times gossip columnist was beginning a Hollywood career when an unidentified assailant strangled her to death in her Los Angeles apartment. Lisa Kopanakis, Gus Raftoponlos, Patricia and Barbara Grimes, Judith Mae Anderson, Sherry Gordon, and Theresa Hall ... If none of these names ring a bell, surely you recall the Brown's Chicken and Seafood in Palatine, where 7 employees were gunned down one January night for just over $1,000 out of the cash register, their bodies left in the freezers.
Ice Box Murders - HOUSTON, TEXAS - Father's Day, June 20, 1965, A day of celebration for many residents in Houston, Texas. It wasn't a likely location for Houston's most grisly double homicide. But on that date, two elderly residents of 1815 Driscoll Street, Fred C. Rogers 81, and his wife, Edwina H. Rogers 72, were murdered. Three nights later their mutilated, dissected bodies were found in the kitchen refrigerator of their home by 2 Houston police officers. 35 years later no arrest has been made in the case. (Excerpts from "The Ice Box Murders" (c)2000 Hugh E. Gardenier, III and Martha Leonard Hughes)
Jack the Ripper stalked the streets of London 31st August 1888 and 9th November 1888. The killer was tied to the deaths of at least 5 prostitutes, but was never brought to justice.
